EMMA STARED AT the dismantled van, her heart pounding, the urgency of the situation rising.

What was happening in there?

What had happened out here?

Though she knew it was absolutely pointless other than to discourage her, Emma dashed into the driver’s side and tried the key for rote. The engine did not even make an attempt to turn over, its key moving a pitiful twenty degrees and locking there to silence. Tears were already rolling down her face by the time she gave up, jerked the keys from the ignition and tossed them angrily at the smashed windshield.

She should have listened to her instincts. As soon as things seemed bad—as soon as she saw the out-of-place clean floor—she should have resigned and insisted they radio back for a taxi to get her home.

Instead she was here, panicking in the dismantled news van while a scream rang out from within the murder house.

Remembering the premonition with a chill, Emma leapt back out of the useless van and intended to respond to the scream—but it was followed by another, even more horrible one that was so blood-curdling she paused.

And in that pause, she remembered the message.

Teeth clenched, Emma slowly neared the passenger side of the van and inspected the note displayed there. The handwriting was a struggle to parse, uneven and frantic—but too much so, somehow. Like someone pretending to be insane to avoid being pegged as a calculating monster.
